Experience the Caring Support of a Postpartum Doula
“Birth Matters… It matters because it is the way we all begin our lives outside of our source, our mother’s bodies. It’s the means from which we enter and feel our first impression of the wider world. For each mother, it is an event that shakes and shapes her to her innermost core. Women’s perceptions about their bodies and their babies’ capabilities will be deeply influenced by the care they receive around the time of birth.” ~ Ina May Gaskin
The childbearing year can be the most amazing time in a woman’s life when she is able to embrace her power and strength and experiences the union of mind, body and spirit. After 10 years as a Birth Doula, Elika has transitioned into offering Postpartum Doula services because of her desire to support women and babies in this most precious time when the body is in need of physical and emotional support, as well as have resources to make caring for baby smooth and nurturing.
What is a doula?
The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “ a woman who serves.” DONA International defines a doula as: "a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." Elika was trained by DONA as a Birth Doula in 2008, and then completed the ICTC Full-Spectrum Doula training in 2016. Just as with her birth doula clients, its important to her that her clients are supported fully and feel empowered during the postpartum period, which we call the 4th Trimester. Its her mission to remind women and families of the timeless wisdom of the body and the amazing powers that women possess.

Emotional SupportThe transition into new parenthood can be vulnerable, and postpartum doulas are experts in emotional support, active listening and encouraging new moms and dads to follow their own hearts. Empathy, a hug or even a good laugh together can do so much for a new parent!
Evidence-Based Information and SupportPostpartum doulas are trained to understand what new babies – and new mothers – truly need. The doula helps with soothing techniques, offers breastfeeding or bottle feeding support, and explains normal newborn behavior.
Practical SupportIt’s all hands on deck with a new baby, and postpartum doulas can help the days go by more smoothly by helping with the baby’s laundry, doing the dishes or preparing simple, nourishing meals.
Partner and Sibling SupportA new baby means transition for everyone, including parents, grandparents and little brothers and sisters. Postpartum doulas understand what everyone needs, and part of their role is to help the entire family adjust and settle in.
